Older Americans Find Pain Relief thanks to SAFE, Effective Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana is now legal in 33 states and Washington DC. In 2020, experts predict the number of states that will allow residents to gain access to medical cannabis, a 100 percent all-natural, and safe remedy for pain relief, will rise to perhaps 40.

Across the board, medical marijuana is known to be safe and tolerated well among people who choose to use it for pain relief. This is especially true to older patients who tend to have many of the qualifying conditions in New York.

These conditions include: Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord damage with spasticity, epilepsy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Neuropathies, Huntington’s disease or other conditions that cause. chronic pain. Additionally, most recently, New York added opioid use disorder to the list of qualifying conditions.

Dr. Jahan Chaudhry, founder of the Compassionate Medical Center in Holbrook, is fully certified by the State of New York to prescribe medical marijuana to qualifying patients. He regularly treats older people and invites anyone suffering with chronic pain, or opioid use disorder, to contact his office at 631-588-4888 for an appointment right away.

Research shows elderly people (average age of 81), who experience chronic pain, neuropathy, sleep issues and/or anxiety, find relief when they take medical marijana, wrote Laszlo Mechtler, MD, of Dent Neurologic Institute in Buffalo, New York, in an article presented at the annual American Academy of Neurology meeting in 2019. Additionally, “32 percent reduced their opioid pain medication.”

“Evidence is growing in support of some indications for medical cannabis — pain, for example — and that needs to be weighed against side effects to which older adults may be more vulnerable, like dizziness, somnolence, confusion, and dry mouth,” Joshua Briscoe, MD, of Duke University Medical Center said.

Dr. Chaudhry will work with patients to help them obtain their medical marijuana cards, sign caregivers up so the medical marijuana can be easily picked up from dispensaries and will also adjust dosages to avoid any side effects such as dizziness or sleepiness that may be experienced by medical marijuana users.
